Nexus Between Corporate Sustainability Reporting and Risk Mitigation: Evidence from Chinese Listed Firms
Publication . Waqas Haider; Fayaz Hussain Tunio; Muhammad Usman Arshad; Paulo Jorge Silveira Ferreira
This study examines how corporate sustainability reporting affects the corporate risk-taking of Chinese firms based on a sample size of 5356 companies for the period 2011– 2023. We examined the overall impact of CSR on CRT, as well as the individual impact of CSR subcomponents such as environmental (CESR), social (CSSR), and governance (CGSR). We further examined how this relationship is affected by moderating variables such as employees’ education and financial flexibility. We used the PCSE technique for cross-sectional dependence and heteroscedasticity in our analysis. But to ensure robustness and address the potential endogeneity, we used the 2SLS and two-step system GMM dynamic panel methods. This study also checks the mechanism analysis and heterogeneity analysis based on revenue growth and firm sizes, respectively. The results states that CSR and its subcomponents (CESR, CSSR, and CGSR) reduce the CRT of the Chinese companies, and this reducing impact becomes stronger when moderated by the employees’ education and financial flexibility of the firms. These results show why sustainability reporting and practices are important for reducing CRT. This research underscores the need for firms to adopt sustainable corporate governance frameworks and highlights the pivotal role of organizational factors in reinforcing the risk-reducing benefits of sustainability initiativ
Analysis of EU investment on rural development and its impact on Portuguese rural regions in the period 2011-2021
Publication . Isabel Abreu; Joaquim Mourato; Francisco J. Mesias
EU's rural areas are an essential part of the European way of life, covering more than 75 % of the Union's territory and housing over 25 % of its population. However, they experience major imbalances compared to urban areas. Thus, it is important to analyse whether EU's rural development (RD) policy is effective in promoting the development of rural areas. This study uses a RD index for 9 Portuguese NUTS 3 regions, with data from 2011 and 2021. The results are then compared with the financial support delivered by EU funds and show their impact on RD in Portugal
Does Climate Policy Uncertainty Abate Financial Inclusion? An Empirical Analysis Through the Lens of Institutional Quality and Governance
Publication . Aamir Aijaz Syed; Sajid Hussain Mirani; Muhammad Abdul Kamal; Paulo Jorge Silveira Ferreira
Environmental sustainability concerns have led to an increased focus on climate finance, resulting in substantial investments to boost financial sector development. However, recently, climate initiatives have encountered multiple policy uncertainties. This study aims to empirically investigate the impact of U.S. climate policy uncertainty (CPU) on Indian financial inclusion, in addition to exploring the moderating role of institutional quality on the aforementioned relationship. To achieve the above objectives, we first constructed two separate indexes for financial inclusion using the weighted method and principal component analysis. Next, to empirically estimate the above relationship, we employed the two-step system-generalized method of moments (Sys-GMM) and the sequential (two-stage) linear panel data model (SELPDM) on the sample data from 2000–2022. The Sys-GMM estimate test validated that climate policy uncertainty negatively influences India’s financial inclusion. However, institutional regulation and governance assist in moderating the negative influence of U.S. climate policy uncertainty on Indian financial inclusion initiatives. Furthermore, the study also confirmed that various dimensions of institutional regulation and governance exert a positive and significant effect on financial inclusion. Finally, the study validates that economic growth and technological advancement assist financial inclusion initiatives in India. The study is an original work and offers several policy recommendations.
Company Management in the Insurance Sector: Valuing Employees and their Work Commitment.
Publication . Serrasqueiro, João; Felix, Marta; Veiga, Pedro Mota; Ferreira, Paulo Jorge Silveira; Almeida, Dora
This study focuses mainly on the role of employees in insurance companies in Portugal, analysing the importance of valuing them and their commitment to their work. Considering the above, this research aims to examine which aspects lead to greater commitment on the part of employees and what makes them feel valued within the organisations where they work. A quantitative methodology was used to fulfil this objective, and a questionnaire was applied to various employees in the insurance companies operating in the Portuguese market. The study’s results of the study highlight a positive relationship between leadership, the inclusion of employees, and their commitment to work. They also highlight that participation in decision-making positively influences their satisfaction, appreciation, and loyalty to their company. It can, therefore, be concluded that investing in employees and increasing their satisfaction and commitment is crucial for sustainable growth and organisational success.
